Presentation

The “Trofeu Sant Jordi” was created in 2012 due to the lack of international competitions for younger fencers. The competition’s main objective is to offer young fencers the opportunity to compete internationally in their own age category. Since its beginning, it has been part of the M15 circuit of the Royal Spanish Fencing Federation (RFEE), guaranteeing high participation. Given its international focus, it has been closely involved from the early years with the European Fencing Confederation’s (EFC) project to create a European circuit for this age group.

The competition’s defining characteristic is its connection to its origins: the Sant Jordi festivity in Catalonia on April 23rd, the date around which the competition is held. For this reason, the Trofeu Sant Jordi has always sought to maintain its own distinct identity in various aspects:

  • Sant Jordi (Saint George) was an armed and combative knight, like all fencers.
  • The tradition of giving a book and a rose on this day maintains sensitivity and culture, aspects that also belong to the world of fencing.
  • The competition format has always been designed to allow participants to compete in the maximum number of bouts, within the limits of the regulations of the circuits to which it belongs.
  • The competition also recognizes the coaches of the winners for their important role in training.
  • The tournament maintains a gallery of winners (a kind of “Hall of Fame”) that is publicly displayed to honor them and serve as an incentive.
  • The aim has always been to award trophies specially designed for the competition, and for participants to receive gifts that also help them create lasting memories.
Poster of past years

Over the years, the Sant Jordi Trophy has established itself as a benchmark on the national and international calendar for youth categories. Its sustained growth has allowed each edition to bring together fencers from numerous clubs and countries, enriching the technical level of the bouts and fostering values such as respect, sportsmanship, and camaraderie among young athletes. The organizers have always placed special emphasis on creating a welcoming and safe environment, prioritizing both the athletic development and the personal growth of the participants.

Since 2023, the tournament has been held in Sant Cugat, where the city’s club and City Council have embraced the project with great enthusiasm and provided everything necessary for its organizational success. The involvement of local institutions, along with improvements to the facilities and services, has allowed for a significant leap forward in the competition experience, increasing the event’s visibility and strengthening its international profile. For this reason, the tournament received last year the award for Sant Cugat’s best international projection .

In 2025, the Royal Spanish Fencing Federation (RFEE) and the European Fencing Confederation (EFC) agreed that the 2026 edition of the Sant Jordi Trophy will include a foil competition for under-14s (M14) within the EFC’s European U14 circuit. This means the Sant Jordi Trophy will incorporate both the regular foil competition for under-15s (U15), which is part of the Spanish U15 circuit, and the new European U14 competition. This allows some participants to compete in both events, which is expected to significantly boost participation, especially internationally.

The M15 sabre competition continues as usual, but it is no longer possible to hold the large épée competition due to a lack of available space on the weekend.

Pierluigi Chicca

To offer an additional incentive to younger fencers, two open foil competition for those under 10 (I10) and 12 (U12) have also been included, dedicated to Maestro Pierluigi Chicca, three-time Olympic medalist and former coach of the founders of the Sant Cugat club. This event is organized in collaboration with the historic SAM (Sala d’Armes Montjuïc) club of Barcelona, founded in 1977 by Pierluigi Chicca himself.

The Sant Cugat Fencing Club, together with the Catalan Fencing Federation (FCE) and the Royal Spanish Fencing Federation (RFEE), hopes that this competition will be very beneficial for all participants and provide them with a great opportunity to gain experience on the piste, as well as a memory that will motivate them to return for future editions.

The organization wishes to express special thanks to the Sant Cugat del Vallès City Council for providing the “La Guinardera” venue, whose availability and support have been essential to making the growth and consolidation of the Sant Jordi Trophy possible.
